Project N.O.M.A.D.
Project N.O.M.A.D. (Node for Offline Media, Archives, and Data) is a free, open-source offline server that allows you to run a personal, self-contained "internet" completely disconnected from the outside world.
It acts as a local-first digital survival and knowledge kit, making it incredibly popular for emergency preparedness, off-grid living, and privacy-focused users.
Key Features
- Local AI: Run Large Language Models (LLMs) locally on your hardware with no internet, cloud access, or API keys required.
- Offline Knowledge: Access full local archives of Wikipedia, medical references, and survival guides.
- Offline Navigation: Use localized, mapping and navigation tools without cellular service or GPS.
- Education Platforms: Store and utilize educational tools like Khan Academy directly on your local network.
How It Works
Instead of relying on cloud servers or web APIs, NOMAD uses Docker to run a centralized Command Center on your computer. You connect to it via your web browser on any device on your local network.
While you do need an active internet connection to initially download the project and the specific data bundles (like Wikipedia and AI models), once downloaded, the entire system functions perfectly with the internet completely disconnected
Hardware Requirements
- Platform: It is designed to run on x86 bare-metal computers (such as older PCs, mini PCs, or gaming rigs) running Debian-based Linux operating systems like Ubuntu.
- Resource Demand: While the base knowledge and mapping applications are lightweight, running high-quality local AI models requires decent hardware with sufficient RAM and GPU acceleration
