APRS
APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) is an amateur radio-based digital system that transmits real-time data—such as GPS coordinates, weather reports, and short messages—over radio frequencies. It allows ham operators to track vehicles, send texts, and display location data on maps without relying on cellular service.
- How it Works: It uses packet radio technology, typically on the 2-meter VHF band (144.39 MHz in North America).
- Core Functions: It provides real-time tracking of moving objects, weather station data, and short text messages, often used for emergency services or search and rescue.
- Hardware: It requires an APRS-enabled radio or a standard transceiver paired with a GPS tracker and a modem (TNC).
- Offline Operation: APRS works independently of the internet. However, local radio packets can be sent to an "IGate" and then displayed on internet-based maps.
